It seems that San Martino di Castrozza was originally the old hospice in San Martino and Giuliano that hosted the pilgrims along the road between the Primiero and the Val di Fiemme valleys.

Instead, the tourist destination that nowadays everyone knows already started to develop towards the end of the 19th century, thanks to the precious contribution made by the English and German mountaineers. Its fame grew quickly, so much so that thanks to its elegant and royal appearance this location inspired the genius of Arthur Schnitzler and Richard Strauss.
